This Level 3 Diploma in Canine Nutrition will give learners the necessary knowledge and skills to become a qualified canine nutritionist. 

This comprehensive course covers the core principles of canine nutrition. You’ll learn about the canine digestive system and the process of creating pet food. As well as the canine microbiome, immunity, and behaviours.

In addition to this, you’ll develop the understanding needed to work alongside other animal care professionals. Helping animal caregivers ensure they’re looking after dogs as best they can. 

Combining your love for dogs alongside accredited Ofqual qualification can lead to many opportunities working in canine nutrition. 

 

Developing your Career

Upon completion of your qualification, you’ll be a qualified canine nutritionist. This allows you to confidently seek employment in various animal-related areas.

Canine nutritionists offer dietary advice and diet-based treatment plans for all breeds of dogs. You’re able to find employment in food manufacturing, pet shops, veterinary practices, animal charities or government agencies.

There is also opportunity to work as a specialist consultant with experience. As well as the opportunity to progress further with your education. Completing a higher education allows you to work on funded research projects or as a lecturer. 

 

 

This course consists of 7 units.

Unit 1: Principles of Canine Nutrition

In completion of this unit you will:

·       Understand concepts of nutritional health and characteristics of both macronutrients and micronutrients

·       Differentiate between essential and non-essential nutrients

·       Discuss the role and function of relevant minerals and vitamins in canine health

·       Understand factors affecting intake, digestion, and absorption

·       Evaluate the dog’s dietary use of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and water

Unit 2: Canine Digestive Anatomy and Physiology

In completion of this unit you will:

·       Explore how food is digested and utilised in the canine

·       Learn about the main stages of food processing

·       Understand health conditions associated with digestion

Unit 3: Life Stage Canine Nutrition

In completion of this unit you will:

·       Understand the nutritional requirements of a pregnant bitch and a puppy

·       Know the purpose and use of a body condition score

·       Understand the role of nutrition and antioxidants for the ageing dog

·       Be able to identify factors which suggests that a dietary change is warranted for an adult dog

Unit 4: Canine Evolution

In completion of this unit you will:

·       Learn about the evolution of canines and how their nutritional requirements developed

·       Explore the domestication of dogs

·       Learn how to apply lessons learned from the evolution of the dog for optimal canine health

Unit 5: Pet Food

In completion of this unit you will:

·       Explore the history of the pet food industry

·       Gain an understanding on how wet and dry dog food is processed

·       Learn about manufacturer guidelines

Unit 6: Canine Microbiome, Immunity and Behaviour

In completion of this unit you will:

·       Learn about the composition of the microbiome and how the microbiome influences behaviour

·       Explore the factors affecting microbiome composition, including how this affects the skin in canines

·       Examine the influence that microbiomes have on immune functions and behaviour

Unit 7: Research in Canine Nutrition

In completion of this unit you will:

·       Explore the purpose of research in canine nutrition

·       Learn about the ethical issues relating to research

·       Discover research methodologies that are relevant to canine nutrition

 

There are no prior qualifications or prerequisites necessary to enrol on this course. However, students must be aged 16 or over.

This qualification is available online, to start at any time. Upon successful completion of this course, you will gain an Ofqual Regulated Qualification at Level 3.

When studying the Level 3 Diploma in Canine Nutrition you will be assessed through a variety of tasks. Each unit includes a range of in-depth assessments. These are designed to ensure you understand the learning outcomes of each unit.

Once you have successfully completed all your assessments, you will receive your final grade and receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification. 

As part of your programme, you will also receive advice on how to get the most out of your diploma.

On successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Canine Nutrition (Qualification number 603/7213/8.) you will gain an Ofqual regulated Diploma at level 3 from the awarding body Open College Network West Midlands.
