This Level 3 Award in Small Animal Care and Welfare is an Ofqual regulated qualification that meets the DEFRA Animal Activity Licensing Regulations.

This Small Animal Welfare Award gives learners an understanding of how to achieve and maintain high standards of animal welfare for a range of small animals including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, birds, and reptiles.

The course is comprised of 2 core units covering the five welfare needs of a variety of animal species and breeds.

Developing Your Career

This Level 3 Award in Small Animal Care and Welfare has been carefully developed for students, seeking employment in animal care. by achieving this recognised qualification, students will show potential employers that they possess the relevant theory necessary for work in animal care and related animal welfare positions.

Alternatively, students may choose to study an additional animal care course that points them in the direction of a more specialised animal employment role such as: dog grooming, dog behaviour, cattery manager, kennel manager or pet sitter.

 

 

This course consists of 2 units. 

Unit 1: Small Animal Welfare

On completion of this unit students will:

·         Learn the information which is required to understand the welfare needs of a variety of small animals.

·         Understand the complex welfare needs of different species and breeds.

·         Learn the roles of animal welfare organisations, the current animal welfare legislation, and the codes of practice for dogs and cats.

·         Know how to keep small animals healthy and the checks which need to be carried out to monitor and maintain optimum health.

·         Gain an understanding of the behaviour patterns of different small animals and potential influences on their behaviour.

·         Feel confident in knowing how to improve small animals physical and mental welfare.

Unit 2: Animal First Aid

On completion of this unit students will:

·         Know the required information to provide small animals with the necessities of basic first aid, including rules of first aid, classification of an emergency, ABC of first aid and how to deal with a range of issues such as choking, burns, wounds, hyperthermia, seizures, and poisoning in animals.

·         Be aware of what is included in a first aid kit for a range of animal species.

·         Understand the examination process for injured animals, the signs of different first aid situations, how to recognise when the vet should be called and if first aid is required.

There are no prior qualifications or prerequisites necessary to enrol on this course. However, students must be aged 16 or over.

This qualification is available online, to start at any time. Upon successful completion of this course, you will gain an Ofqual Regulated Qualification at Level 3.

The approximate time required to complete the course is 32 hours.

When studying the Level 3 Award in Small Animal Care and Welfare you will be assessed through a variety of tasks. Each unit includes a range of in-depth assessments. These are designed to ensure you understand the learning outcomes of each unit.

Once you have successfully completed all your assessments, you will receive your final grade and receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification. 

As part of your programme, you will also receive advice on how to get the most out of your diploma.

On successful completion of the Open College Network West Midlands course, you will gain an Ofqual regulated qualification at Level 3 Award in Small Animal Care and Welfare. Students will additionally gain a certificate, acknowledging their achievements.
