Pet shop staff care for a wide range of small animals including fish and amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. They are required by law to provide a safe, clean and enriching environment and to ensure that animals are appropriately cared for. 

Pet shop employees are also responsible for educating the public on how to properly take care of their pets at home. So they know what’s required to provide proper housing, appropriate forms of enrichment and correct nutrition.

It is a legal requirement to obtain a level 2 or level 3 Ofqual regulated qualification to work with animals in a pet shop environment. Therefore, you’re giving yourself the best chance of employment by completing the relevant training.

This Level 3 Award for Pet Care in Retail is an Ofqual regulated qualification that meets AAL licensing requirements for the Higher Standards.

This qualification has been carefully created to aid students wishing to work with animals in a pet shop environment. Teaching them vital information about animal health and treatment, types of accommodation and environmental enrichment within a pet shop setting.

This Level 3 Award for Pet Care in Retail gives learners an understanding of how to care for animals in a retail setting and be able to advise customers on purchasing a pet.

The course is comprised of 6 core units covering the knowledge required for pet care businesses and that to offer relevant and essential advice to customers.

This Level 3 Award for Pet Care in Retail has been carefully developed for students seeking employment to work with animals in a pet shop environment. By achieving this recognised qualification, students will show potential employers that they possess the comprehensive knowledge of animal care requirements and products that is essential for work in a pet shop. 

Alternatively, students can progress on to a range of related qualifications that will amplify their knowledge of animal welfare and complement the advice they can pass onto pet owners. Whether they wish to study courses in pet bereavement, animal first aid or animal behaviour.

 

This course consists of 6 units.

Unit 1: Animals as pets

On completion of this unit students will:

·        Understand the classification and history of common pet species.

·        Explore the notion of keeping animals as pets.

·        Understand the legislation and regulations relevant to pet retail environments.

Unit 2: Animal Nutrition

On completion of this unit students will:

·        Learn about the nutritional requirements of companion, bird, aquatic and exotic species.

·        Understand the role of the different nutrients within the body and the digestive mechanisms.

·        Learn about different food types, their nutritional contents and the natural feeding behaviour of common pet species.

·        Learn how to create an effective feed plan, how to change this for different life stages and how to identify the signs of nutritional deficiencies.

Unit 3: Animal Disease, Health and Hygiene

On completion of this unit students will:

·        Learn about the animal health and hygiene requirements of different pet species.

·        Understand the prevention and treatment of common diseases.

·        Learn about the importance of an effective care plan and the legislation relating to cleaning, hygiene, and waste disposal.

·        Learn how to deliver basic treatments and preventative measures.

Unit 4: Animal Accommodation and Enrichment

On completion of this unit students will:

·        Explore different types of animal accommodation including the environmental conditions required for different species.

·        Learn about the importance of environmental enrichment for wellbeing and the various ways this can be provided for different species.

Unit 5: Advising Customers on Purchasing a Pet

On completion of this unit students will:

·        Learn how to advise customers about their initial purchase, how to ensure a good match and how to advise on the provision of ongoing care.

·        Learn about the different routes to pet ownership and the legal obligations of pet owners and pet retailers.

Unit 6: Customer Care and Retail in a Pet Shop

On completion of this unit students will:

·        Learn about pet retail, customer care and staff wellbeing.

·        Understand legislation relating to pet retail environments including health and safety and licencing regulations.

This course is open for all to study, providing that students are at least 16 years of age. No prior experience or qualifications are required. 

This qualification is available online, to start at any time. Upon successful completion of this course, you will gain an Ofqual Regulated Qualification at Level 3.

The approximate time required to complete the course is 103 hours.

When studying the Level 3 Award for Pet Care in Retail you will be assessed through a variety of tasks. Each unit includes a range of in-depth assessments. These are designed to ensure you understand the learning outcomes of each unit.

Once you have successfully completed all your assessments, you will receive your final grade and receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification.

As part of your programme, you will also receive advice on how to get the most out of your award.

On successful completion of the Open College Network West Midlands course, you will gain an Ofqual regulated qualification at Level 3 Award for Pet Care in Retail.
