The Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Nursing Assistants has been created for anyone seeking a regulated qualification. This qualification has been designed to provide knowledge and practical skills for those wishing to work in animal veterinary care. Learners will develop skills that will allow them to work as a Veterinary Nursing Assistant in a range of animal care environments or into further study of animal health, welfare, and care.

This Diploma is highly regarded by existing veterinary practices. It provides an alternative route to GCSE’s whilst enhancing opportunities for progression into the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for the Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma.

Unit 10 involves a practical placement that students must find on their own. One of our team will be happy to advise students on finding a placement. We can additionally provide students with template letters to use when approaching animal establishments for practical placements.

This course consists of 10 units. 

Unit 1: Principles of Animal Health

In this unit you will:

·         Explore the commonly used terminology in veterinary practice and how they relate to a variety of species.

·         Learn the signs of normal and abnormal health in many animals such as dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, snakes, lizards, and tortoises.

·         Discover how to best ensure animal wellbeing and health, whilst carrying out routine health checks.

Unit 2: Principles of Body Language and Behaviour

In this unit you will:

·         Learn the correct handling and restraint techniques during veterinary procedures, essential for reducing stress in domestic mammals and reptiles.

·         Understand, recognise, and learn how to manage fear and stress whilst handling a variety of animals.

Unit 3: Principle of Hygiene, Cleaning, and Infection

In this unit you will:

·         Understand the importance of cleaning standards and hygiene to prevent the spread of disease and infection in animal establishments.

·         Learn about infectious diseases commonly seen in domestic mammals and reptiles and the importance of maintaining clean environments.

·         Learn the fundamental differences between disinfection and sterilisation, whilst learning about a range of cleaning and disinfection chemicals.

·         Be able to follow a cleaning protocol involving a thorough understanding of areas that require cleaning and the risks of infections.

·         Discover theory on equipment sterilisation within a veterinary practice, as well as waste disposal methods and ways of reducing waste in an animal nursing environment.

Unit 4: Reception and Administrative Duties in a Veterinary Practice

On completion of this unit you will:

·         Understand the services provided in veterinary practices including referral processes and the marketing of veterinary services.

·         Be aware of professional standards and requirements in a veterinary environment.

·         Discover the importance of health and safety in a veterinary work environment.

·         Learn how to deal with various client tasks such as registering a new client, making appointments, answering phones, taking payments, dealing with difficult or sensitive situations and the importance of client confidentiality.

Unit 5: The Pharmacy in a Veterinary Practice

On completion of this unit you will:

·         Explore the workings of the veterinary pharmacy, including stock control, waste disposal, safe and secure storage of medicines, and the importance of adherence to procedures and protocols.

·         Discover different veterinary medicines and the medicine’s management pathway, including prescribing, dispensing and administration.

Unit 6: Euthanasia and Bereavement  

On completion of this unit you will:

·         Gain an understanding of the reasons for euthanasia alongside the circumstances when euthanasia might be required.

·         Learn how the euthanasia process is carried out and the options for the disposal of a deceased pet.

·         Develop compassion and understanding of the stages of grief and be able to recognise each stage.

Unit 7: Principles of First Aid

On completion of this unit you will:

·         Explore the principles of first aid in veterinary emergencies.

·         Students will learn the importance of communication amongst the veterinary team and how best to support clients during emergencies.

·         This unit also includes information about legislation involved in first aid treatment, how to recognise veterinary emergencies and how to treat common injuries.

Unit 8: Veterinary Instruments

On completion of this unit you will:

·         Learn how to identify the instruments used for routine surgeries, for example, castration, spay, and tumour removal.

·         This unit also covers the correct care, cleaning, and storage of veterinary instruments as well as packaging and sterilisation.

Unit 9: Care of Wildlife in Veterinary Practice

On completion of this unit you will:

·         Learn about the British wildlife including garden birds, rabbits, hedgehogs, deer, badgers, and foxes.

·         Students will learn how best to rehabilitate wildlife if treatment is beyond the expertise of general practice.

Unit 10: Practical Placement

·         Students must organise their own practical placement.

There are no prerequisites for studying this diploma, however, you must be a minimum of 16 years of age to enrol. The Ofqual Code for this diploma is 603/5172/X.

The qualification is comprised of 10 comprehensive units, including a practical training placement which students must organise themselves. You will not be able to pass this qualification without this additional practical training.

Students are required to find a placement within registered veterinary practices or animal establishments. Placements are not required to be in RCVS training practices; however, it will need to be inside an environment where you are supervised by a qualified veterinary nurse or vet. this also includes zoos, private practices, animal charities, plus some animal care businesses.

Placements will be assessed by course tutors and students are required to provide evidence of practical training. Practical criteria will be outlined during the course.

The approximate time required to complete the course is 237 hours.

When studying the Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Nursing Assistants, you will be assessed through a variety of tasks. Each unit will be assessed through a variety of in-depth assessments, which have been designed to ensure you understand the learning outcomes of each unit.

Once you have successfully completed all your assessments and practical placement of your choice, you will receive your final grade and receive your certificate of completion alongside your qualification. 

As part of your studies, you will also receive guidance on how to make the most out of your Diploma.

On successful completion of this Open College Network West Midlands Qualification, you will have a Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Nursing Assistants. Additionally, students will receive a certificate acknowledging their achievements! This course has been assigned 27 credits.
